About

Simone Guimars is a Brazilian-Canadian multimedia artist working with photography, video, mixed media, and 3D. Her practice explores light, texture, and movement as core elements of poetic construction, examining imperfection, atmosphere, and ambiguity as a response to the increasing standardization of images shaped by optimization processes and A.I.

Influenced by the Japanese photographic movement are-bure-boke — grainy, blurry, out-of-focus — Simone embraces technical instability as a conscious visual choice. Rather than pursuing generic technical perfection, her work prioritizes presence, materiality, and emotional resonance, approaching objects, spaces, and human traces as expressive territories rather than tightly controlled images.

She studied painting at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage (EAV Parque Lage) in Rio de Janeiro and spent seven years working in the Arts Department of the British Council, where she collaborated with artists and curators from both Brazil and the UK on award-winning exhibitions and events, including projects with renown artist Rachel Whiteread, Henry Moore Foundation, TATE, Rio Film Festival, Anima Mundi and more. In 2002, she received a curatorial certificate from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.

In 2007, Simone relocated to Canada and in 2013, deepened her artistic research under the mentorship of Canadian artist, critic, and OCAD University professor Pete Smith. Since 2016, she has participated in exhibitions and art fairs in Toronto. Alongside her artistic practice, she holds a degree in marketing and a diploma in 3D Art (view portfolio) from Think Tank Training Centre in Vancouver, consolidating a trajectory that moves fluidly between artistic creation, branding, visual strategy, and cultural programming, with professional experience across Brazil, Canada, and the UK.

Currently based in Brazil, Simone has been focusing on photography and video art. In 2025, she developed the video art for Project Corpo Paisagem, approved by the Paraná State Department of Culture, and edited interview-based video content for Projeto e.NEGRO.SER (MuMA, Curitiba). She is also developing photographic and video art projects centered on product design and contemporary artistic practices in Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro (view portfolio), in collaboration with studios and brands such as Studio Avelã, Dsgnselo, Boulle, Think Lighting + Design, and Feu Fotografia.

Since 2016, Simone has allocated part of the proceeds from her work to initiatives dedicated to animal protection, environmental preservation, and human rights causes.
