About
Simone Guimars is a Brazilian-Canadian photographer and visual artist whose practice integrates fine art photography, video, and mixed media. Her photographic work explores light, texture, and movement as core elements of poetic construction. By examining imperfection, atmosphere, and ambiguity, she creates an artistic response to the increasing standardization of images shaped by optimization processes and artificial intelligence.
Influenced by the Japanese photographic movement are-bure-boke (grainy, blurry, out-of-focus), Simone embraces technical instability as a conscious visual choice. Rather than pursuing generic technical perfection, her photography prioritizes presence, materiality, and emotional resonance. She approaches captured objects, spaces, and human traces as expressive territories rather than tightly controlled images.
Her artistic foundation began with painting studies at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage (EAV Parque Lage) in Rio de Janeiro. She later spent seven years working in the Arts Department of the British Council, collaborating with international artists and curators on award-winning exhibitions and events, including projects with Rachel Whiteread, the Henry Moore Foundation, TATE, Rio Film Festival, and Anima Mundi. In 2002, she earned a curatorial certificate from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.
In 2007, Simone relocated to Canada, where she deepened her visual arts research under the mentorship of Canadian artist, critic, and OCAD University professor Pete Smith. Since 2016, she has showcased her photography and artwork in exhibitions and art fairs across Toronto. Alongside her visual arts career, she holds a degree in marketing and a diploma in 3D Art from the Think Tank Training Centre in Vancouver (view portfolio), consolidating a trajectory that moves fluidly between artistic creation, branding, visual strategy, and cultural programming across Brazil, Canada, and the UK.
Currently based in Brazil, Simone focuses primarily on fine art photography and video art. In 2026, she presents PORTAL, a solo exhibition as part of the 16th Curitiba International Biennial of Contemporary Art, at APAP/PR in Curitiba. In 2025, she developed the video art layout for Project Corpo Paisagem, approved by the Paraná State Department of Culture, and edited interview-based video content for Projeto e.NEGRO.SER (MuMA, Curitiba). She frequently develops contemporary photographic campaigns and video art centered on design, collaborating with specialized studios and brands including Studio Avelã, Dsgnselo, Boulle, Think Lighting + Design, and Feu Fotografia (view portfolio).
Since 2016, Simone has allocated a portion of her artistic proceeds to grassroots initiatives dedicated to animal protection, environmental preservation, and human rights causes.
